the party.

making that all important wish....
opening the present from her little brother...snorkeling!!

last weekend was party weekend.
a special someone turned 7. {seven!!! when did that happen?!}
she decided to invite all the girls in the class {+ a couple from the next door class} over for a tea party.
it started as a mad hatter's tea party but in the end just became a good old fashioned tea party.
we all got dressed up and clinked tea cups and toasted {yes we had REAL tea cups!}
all the girls at the same time held up their cups and sang out "remember...pinkies out!"
this year i decided to keep the menu short - fruit, cake + tea - and concentrate on creating the mood for the girls. i think it worked out pretty great. {and now i have party bunting forever! yeah!}

the weather cooperated and the real heat arrived on sunday {and has continued through this week! insert brow wipe here.}.
the water balloon game and jumping through the sprinkler were a big hit!
and when the first little girly asked me "what do we do now?" - ding dong - the first parent arrived.
perfect timing. perfect everything.

great party.
great group of kids.
happy happy birthday day. xoxo

{i can now rest till july 18th.....right here....}

happy birthday to me.

today when i open my eyes to the world and look around i will do so from the eyes of a thirty-four year old. wow. how did this happen? how has it all gone by so fast. sometimes i feel like an 18 year playing house then have to realize that no i'm the mom! wow...i'm the mom.

i was talking to a friend the other day telling her of my upcoming birthday and  telling her the plans the 20-year old me had - to concur the film world - and what i had expected of the 34 year old me and how i was going to be such a success by now. and she looked at me without missing a beat and said - you are a success, look at what you made! and she pointed to my chickens.

yes...i am a success. might not have made it in the film industry but i have made it. my life starring me.

i wonder what today will bring?

puttering + fresh bread.

this morning was a morning for puttering.

this morning was a morning for puttering and staying in pajamas till lunch.

this morning was a morning for puttering, staying in pajamas till lunch and fresh baked bread.

irish soda bread to be exact. i love irish soda bread.

growing up this bread would make it's grand entrance into the house in a butter soaked brown paper bag, having just been bought from the savary island pie co., and it would sliced up right away - no real care that dinner was most likely a hour away - each sliced would be smeared with a thin layer of butter, popped in the microwave for about 10 seconds then stopping only for a brief moment to breath it in before the first bite. this would continue till every member of the family had their turn and the rotation would begin again until the loaf was all but gone. here is where the major business of summer was conducted - what we did that day, what are plans are for that night, who is not speaking to whom and who is dating whom now (the select gossip two teenage girls were ready to spill) - this is where we were at ease.

this morning i felt was the perfect day for such a loaf. no raising, no waiting other than the baking time. patiently waiting for that moment when we can bite in to the dense piece. we had the morning to ourselves, cleaning the house as company is coming but not so imminent that their is a panic. i can clean at my pace and for me that is enjoyable. we had a lazy morning and stopped everything to savour a slice of warm bread - aydan declaring it is her favorite and asking for another piece! while i was eating it i could already see a version studded with cranberries and walnuts & a pot of cranberry sauce on stand-by, a lemon blueberry variety and as well a cinnamon raisin loaf. but for right now we are going to enjoy the original, and fingers crossed for traditions, that i will be able to share this in years to come with my kids as my mom did with us girls.

this morning i was relaxed, eating fresh bread and enjoying my kids.

this morning i felt vacation.
this afternoon we are going to the outdoor public pool. summer.

irish soda bread
adapted from ina garten.
this recipe is from ina garten and although different from my childhood version it fits the bill just the same and the best part? everyone loved it! even with orange zest in it!!

4 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
4 tablespoons of cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1 3/4 cups cold buttermilk, shaken
1 large egg - beaten
zest of one large orange

+pre-heat your oven to 375 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
+combine flour, sugar, soda and salt in the mixer bowl.
+add the butter to the mixer and mix until the butter is the size of peas.
+beat together the milk, egg and zest in a glass measuring cup. with the mixer on low, very slowly add the wet mix to the dry. mix until it just comes together. mix will be very wet.
+dump it on to a well floured surface and knead bread about 10 to 15 times and then shape in to a miche ball. score the top with a large X using a serated knife. place loaf onto prepared sheet and pop in the oven for about 45 to 55 minutes.

company & a momentous celebration.

this weekend around here was definitely one for the books. this weekend the husband's sister and our nephew came to visit from the westcoast. the kids have known for a while but were getting so excited and started counting the sleeps once monday rolled around. and when they arrived the hooting and hollering began. they were so thrilled and bubbling over with happiness. they were all a chatter, stepping on each others words as they were letting them in on what they had planned out for the weekend. pretty special to watch. and when we all headed to baseball that friday night aydan was so excited to introduce her aunty and show her off.

saturday brought with it heat, heat and more heat. to beat this their aunt treated them to a movie - cars 2. then we headed home to start decorating and getting ready for the big occasion of the weekend - dad's birthday. the big 5-0. and i was doubly excited because, if my calculations were right, i had actually fooled the un-foolable (word? haha) and got him a gift that he never guessed. he thought he had it but no sir - you were wrong. i had sent out an email months ago to family and had organized a present for him that he never thought he would get. we got him an ipad 2. GOTCHA!! he was shocked, embaressed and excited. i was so happy that i was able to get him something special for this day as it was a pretty big birthday - we ended up having his party on the weekend so he could enjoy a few wobbly pops as we don't drink on school nights and of course all celebrations are governed by the chance for drinking. sad but true. the night took a turn when we presented him with his birthday cake - cupcakes decorated by everyone - and then the cake fight started. by the end of it we all ended up with cake on our faces and you know what?...i wouldn't have scripted it any other way.

the rest of the weekend brought with it: turning the hot tub into a cold tub - genius! an afternoon at the beach. stories with josh and auntie. going our for dinner - thank you for that. enjoying family. watching rango with popcorn and licorice. an amazing lighting show. hot humid weather. somebody else doing my dishes *sigh*. a water gun/sprinkler/water fight. going to the park. playing lots of cards. giant hot wheel track. road hockey. batting practice. and saying goodbye.

i would like to thank the husband's mom, sisters + families, my mom and sister, my sister & fiancee and our great aunt and uncle for their contribution to the gift. thank you. thank you. thank you.
